Our mission isn’t to elect certain individuals or guarantee legislative wins. It’s to steadily shift the window of political and economic possibility one campaign, governing term, and brave conversation at a time. We’re shifting what’s possible tomorrow by shaping and sharpening what’s talked about today.

We conduct novel research and aggregate the research of other leading organizations to create The Power Playbook — a ready-made menu of ambitious and actionable policy solutions (all directly countering corporate power) for local and state candidates to run on and officeholders to enact.

We run workshops for those eager to lead their community in the future, but unsure whether local government has the authority to push the progress they’re interested in — particularly when taking on powerful interests. (Spoiler: It does.) Local is where this fight will be fought and won.

Local is also what people see and feel: the water they drink, the internet they use, the curriculum their kid learns, and the unions they’re empowered to join. It’s the stuff that makes up a life — and it’s the stuff most captured, often invisibly, by corporate power.

The most dangerous aspect of a status quo protected by entrenched power is not the concentration of power itself, but what that concentration does to our collective capacity to imagine anything else. This is the shift we’re after — one campaign, governing term, and brave conversation at a time.

Don’t believe us? Name a problem — climate change, eroding democracy, deep and growing inequality, lack of housing and affordability — and imagine solving it. Now imagine solving it without first addressing the power corporations exert over markets, politics, governance, and culture.
Corporate power is the first thing we fix, because it’s the thing that keeps us from fixing everything else.

There’s plenty to be done, even when Washington is a mess. Our neighborhoods, wards, counties, cities, and states hold tremendous democratic power over corporate power… if they know how to use it. That’s where we come in.
